The South Carolina Film Commission and Trident Technical College have teamed up with Urban League of the Upstate for a three-day Grip Workshop, serving as key basic training on the professional Grip department. Apply below to enroll.

This training is free. Once completed you will be eligible for placement on film, TV and commercial sets through internships and other opportunities, as a strategic path for beginning a career in South Carolina’s production industry.

The training will be led by noted Key Grip and other professional crew, and will focus on production industry orientation/overview, hands on training with Grip gear (including working off Grip trucks), and other fundamental instruction.

Only South Carolina residents are eligible. All ages and backgrounds are encouraged to apply (over 18-years-old only). The production industry incorporates hundreds of skill-sets and is an ideal place for workers seeking second careers, military veterans, and those just joining the workforce. Grip department is particularly suited for those with basic mechanical aptitude.

Space is severely limited. Only those willing to commit to completing the training and are serious about a career in professional Grip departments should apply.

APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY MAY 15, 2023.

The training will take place at ETV Studios at USC-Upstate in Spartanburg. Accepted parties will be informed by mid-May and will receive more details then.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
In order to participate in this Grip training and work in the professional production industry, you must be able to do all of the following:

  1. To have at least average/normal vision and hearing.

  2. To be able to comprehend and execute verbal and/or written directions. These directions may require understanding technical terminology and concepts.

  3. To be able to communicate technical information verbally and in writing.

  4. To possess the physical ability to operate electronic and mechanical equipment including computers, cameras, lights, consoles, and related production equipment.

  5. To be able to climb ladders and work on platforms.

  6. To be able to drive motor vehicles (trucks/vans/cars) daily and in inclement weather.

  7. To be able to work on productions at odd hours of the day and night including weekends.

  8. To be able to lift and carry heavy equipment (minimum 50 lbs.) for long periods of time over difficult terrain.

  9. To work in inclement weather.

  10. To be able to move quickly while carrying video/film gear.

  11. To be punctual and dependable.

  12. To have your own dependable transportation.

  13. To be able to work long hours.

  14. To be able to work safely around various pieces of electrical equipment.

  15. To be able to work alone and unassisted often with little or no supervision.

  16. To have the physical ability to work with various hand-tools (drills, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.)

  17. To be able to perform mathematical calculation.

  18. To be able to perform assigned duties competently and safely.
