Looking for the next Spielberg? Scorsese? Gerwig? Then the Young Filmmakers screening on May 20 in Columbia was the place to be.

South Carolina Young Filmmakers Project is an annual high school filmmaking competition where students from across the state submit two-minute short films. Each year all entrants are required to incorporate a specific prop into their two-minute short films. This year that prop was playing cards.

After a record number of entries and thorough judging process, the Top Ten finalists and winners named at a special screening at Spotlight Cinemas Capital 8 in Columbia. Their films were shown on the big screen, with Q&A and a reception on-site afterwards.

“The contest has proven to be a great thing for young South Carolina filmmakers,” said Matt Storm, Director of the South Carolina Film Commission. “It’s an opportunity to practice the craft of video storytelling, which is a major driver for all industries at this point, and show it to statewide audiences.”

“We continue to be impressed with the skill and talent Young Filmmakers brings out,” said Glenn Seale, Dean of Film, Media and Visual Arts at Trident Technical College in North Charleston, one of the contest’s main partners. “We encourage everyone to come and see what these filmmakers have cooked up.”
